Artist's Statement:

One of the hard lessons of war is that wars deeply affect people far from the battlefield and long after the fighting has stopped. I experienced this as a young girl when my father returned from World War II.

My father was a highly skilled auto mechanic in the US Army during World War II. Toward the war's end, he was tasked with driving an officer around Europe to visit the concentration camps and gather detailed information about the atrocities that had occurred in those camps. The evidence was sickening and would later be used in the Nuremberg Trials. Though my father lacked the rank to witness these trials in person, the officer he worked with loaned him his coat and ID, told him to enter the building and watch the trial, saying, "I want you to be able to tell your children and grandchildren about being here."

My father was discharged and returned home in the Spring of 1946. While some people returned from The War unable to talk about what they had seen, others--like my father--couldn't stop describing the horrors of war. He continued to talk about it until his death in 1987.

My father's accounts of the Holocaust became my own haunting remembrance. As I became an artist and social worker, I found therapeutic relief through expressing my childhood horrors in art. Like my father, I couldn't keep the dark touch of the Holocaust within me and needed to release it. Like countless others, I've learned that atrocities reach far beyond the direct victims.
